Cartier Tank 'Jumbo' Automatique 17002 - Circa-1975
Cartier Tank 'Jumbo' Automatique 17002
The Cartier Tank line is one of the most iconic in the industry, enduring for over 100 years. The design of the Tank was inspired by the Renault FT-17 tanks, hence its rectangular form with elongated sides, known as Brancards, and the internal minute track resembling the tracks of the tank.
Most vintage Tank's were quite small by modern standards, and powered by manually wound movements. Larger sized Tanks produced post-1980 were often Quartz powered, which continues on to this day. However, for a few years in the 1970's Cartier produced a larger sized Tank with an automatic movement, known as the Jumbo Automatique. These Jumbo Tanks are easily spotted by the tell-tale 'hump' on the case back, which along with the overall larger case size was necessary to fit the automatic new movement. While the hump may look slightly odd at first it plays a roll in allowing room for the rotor while keeping the aesthetic of the watch look as slim as possible, and on the wrist you cannot even tell it is there. It's a quirky feature that we think is a pretty cool tell-tale sign that you have something pretty special.
The 18k yellow gold case measures 28mm x 35mm's for the Jumbo Automatique, and the calibre powering it is known as the 170. This particular piece is also that little more special as it has a Cartier 'Paris' dial, meaning it was sold at the Cartier Boutique in Place Vendome. These dials are often swapped for the regular 'Swiss' dials at service, so the fact that this particular piece has it intact and in such amazing condition is testament to how well it has been cared for over the years.
As you can see from the images, condition is pretty spectacular and is up there with as good as it gets for one of these. It was serviced by Cartier in August 2020, and is currently keeping COSC time. The dial is in spectacular condition. It looks slightly offset to the right to our eyes, but we're reticent to adjust it as it's how it was mounted by Cartier.
It comes mounted on a ColaReb Napoli Italian hand-made strap, and is also accompanied by the original Cartier 18k folding clasp.
Accessories included are the Cartier service pouch, 18k folding clasp and service paperwork from Cartier.
Don’t miss your chance to get a rare Tank Jumbo Paris dial in outstanding condition.
