Daniel Roth Small Seconds Grey Dial
Daniel Roth Small Seconds Grey Dial
Daniel Roth needs no introduction, and is considered to be one of Father’s of the modern independent movement.
The history of Mr Roth is a very interesting one, a tale of promise and talent that and ultimately one of missed opportunity. We won’t go into the full details about the history of Daniel Roth as there are some fantastic articles that chronicle his legacy, but suffice to say had he been producing his eponymous product perhaps just half a decade later, it’s likely we’d still be seeing them being produced alongside the modern greats such as De Bethune, Gronefeld, Voutilainen et al.
For Roth collectors, the simple rule is the earlier the better, and there’s been a sharp rise in interest in his unique product over the past few years. The model here is part of the Hour Glass period, and represents aesthetically what we here at Watch Vault HQ think of when the name Roth comes to mind.
Known as the Small Seconds, it features a 35mm steel case that could only be a DR. The grey and silver dial is exquisitely made and finished, with a recessed sub-seconds sitting amongst vertical guilloche and fine radially-brushed inner ring containing perfectly executed Roman numerals. The blued steel hands absolutely pop against the shades of grey. It’s powered by a Girard Perregaux 3000 base calibre.
This particular example is an early number (sub 50) and presents in fantastic vintage condition after just returning from service by Woods Watchmaking in October 2021. The case shows minor marks and some small dings after a very light case refinish. The movement was fully serviced, and while the crown tube seal was replaced and the tube lubricated, the crown can sometimes be a little finicky when being screwed back in. The threads on the crown are also a touch light-on, but these parts are a little hard to come by and it’s absolutely fine as long as you take care when screwing it back in. We like to be completely open and transparent, hence mentioning it here rather than explaining it in private messages.
Currently mounted on an aftermarket Artisan strap in short size, with Artisan buckle.
Comes with Watch Vault cleaning cloth and Watch Vault travel case.
A really lovely example of an exceedingly rare watch, that’s just been serviced. Don’t snooze on this one.
