ochs und junior Perpetual Calendar – 2018

For those familiar with Watch Vault, you’re probably aware of our adoration for ochs und junior.

If you're not familiar with ochs und junior, they operate on an ethos of radical simplicity, creating amazing complications with as few moving parts as possible. Backed by the amazing brain that is Ludwig Oechslin, they're simply some of the coolest watches in the world. They're also easy to service, comfortable, and extremely limited in production. Each watch can be fully customised and custom built, and can also be modified post-sale at any point in the future which makes them endlessly versatile and interesting.

As it's name suggests, this particular piece houses their amazingly innovative Perpetual Calendar complication. Created using a mere 9 additional components and 3 modified components over the base Ulysse Nardin calibre, it is a work of pure genius. Simple as that. While looking at it for the first time may be confusing, once you understand how to read the date it is extremely intuitive. In fact, it is probably the easiest perpetual calendar on the market to set, and can be set forwards and backwards, and all from the crown…considering the downside of a Perpetual is usually how difficult and time consuming they are to set, combined with an inherent fragility from all the extra components, this solves all those problems in the simplest way possible. Pure Ludwig Oechslin genius.

Ochs und junior make about 15 of these Moonphase pieces a year, making them exceedingly rare to come across.

This particular example has been beautifully specified by the original owner, sporting a blue patina dial and discs indications, rhodium markers, second and power reserve dot, platinum hour and minute hands, hammered platinum leap year and date dots. It’s housed in a raw 42mm titanium case machined by the same company which produces the Titanium components for the Sauber F1 team, and powered by a modified UN-118.

Condition is excellent. There's a few minor scuff marks on the case, some light scratches from strap changes on the rear of the lugs, and some marks on the case back, but looks to have been worn fairly carefully. See images for full details.

For those familiar with ochs und junior, you'll know that then aren't accompanied with large boxes or cases in the pursuit of simplification, and ship attached to cardboard or in a travel case. This one does not have the pouch, but we’ll include a free Watch Vault Watch Pod and the original cardboard backing card.

These cost around 30k AUD brand new and are not available from retailers so no discounts are ever given, making this amazing value for a 2 year old watch in a very desirable colour scheme that also happens to be one of the cleverest perpetual calendars in the world.
