Cartier Santos Dumont Ultra Thin Guilloche Dial Yellow Gold Ref. 1576

Cartier has had a huge resurgence of late within the watch collector community, and with very good reason. Not only the originator of the wrist-watch as we know it today, their unfailing dedication to their own aesthetic makes them instantly recognisable, and are deserving of the respect and reverence they command.

Along with the Tank line, the Cartier Santos line is perhaps their most well known, with this iconic line being widely recognised as the birthplace of the wrist watch. Created at the request of early-Aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont by his friend Louis Cartier, not only was it the first wrist-watch, but also the first tool-watch.

The piece we have here is quite a special one. Known as the Dumont 1576, it has quickly become one of the most desirable vintage Cartier’s of the past few years. With a heritage like it has, along with it’s timeless aesthetic, it’s not hard to see why.

The case measures in 27mm x 36mm and is crafted in 18kt yellow gold, which has taken on a beautifully warm hue. It is powered by the manually wound 021 MC movement, based on the Frédéric Piguet 21,  which was the thinnest movement at the time and allows the watch to measure in at under 5mm in height – astounding.

This particular piece is also that little more special as it has a guilloche dial, fitted in its recent full service with Cartier. The original non-guilloche dial is also included within the package.

Additionally, it is also fitted with the highly desirable and extremely expensive 18kt Cartier gold deployant, also fitted as part of the service, and receipts are included.

As you can see from the images, condition is pretty spectacular. The case shows some scratching and marks in line with its age, but no deep dings, dents or nicks.

Movement is running at around +10 secs per day.

Accessories included are Cartier box, original dial, Watch Vault cleaning cloth, 2 x aftermarket straps and service paperwork from Cartier showing both the service in November 2020, and subsequent warranty repair in March 2021. Note that on the paperwork the model or serial is sometimes marked incorrectly, but this is a keying error by the boutique. Please look at them all as a whole.
