Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch CK2998 311.32.40.30.02.001

Simply one of the coolest Speedmaster releases in recent years, the CK2998 is everything we want in a Speedy. Perfect case size, manual wind Chrono, Pulsations bezel, and an interesting dial which never gets old. Spot on.

The original CK2998 was actually the Speedy that astronaut Wally Shirra wore in 1962 as he orbited the earth during the "Sigma 7" mission, and was originally commemorated in the modern era with the Moonwatch "First Omega in Space" in 2012. This was followed with a Sedna Gold version, then the more commonly seen blue on silver dialled variant in 2016, and then finally this version in 2018. They're all fantastic, but this is the pick of the litter for us.

Utilising a 39.7mm case in steel, it houses a bead-blasted silver dial with black sub-registers, commonly referred to as a Panda configuration. The main dial utilises blackened Alpha-style hands filled with lume, with white Alpha-hands used for the sub-dials for maximum legibility. A pop of colour is added with a red chrono seconds hand, and is also used on the Speedmaster script. Surrounding the dial is a black ceramic Pulsations bezel, and it utilises a sapphire crystal.

Powering it is the venerable calibre 1861, the famous manual-winding chronograph movement, which is covered by a caseback embossed with the original 1962 Seahorse. This example is mounted to an aftermarket Forstner Flat Link bracelet, and also includes the lovely OEM calfskin racing strap with tang buckle.

Originally purchased in 2018, this particular example presents in TZ Good condition. The case shows only light signs of wear, with a rub mark on the left side of the case toward the tip of the lug, with the presence of some small pin dents around the outer edge of the bezel which is the reason for the 'Good' rather than 'Excellent' grading according to our grading scale. The underside of the lugs shows some scratches from strap changes, and the Forstner bracelet shows some desk diving marks across some links and the clasp. No known service history, but a little young for that. All function operating as they should, and it's currently keeping time at around +8 seconds per day at over 300 degrees of amplitude.
