Rolex Cellini Prince 5442/5 Rose Gold
Rolex Cellini Prince 5442/5
Folks often think the most minor of detail changes is Rolex doing something wild, but the fact of the matter is that most lines within the range have just gone through steady evolution, much like the 911. Sure, a Daytona from the 60's is very different to a modern 6 digit reference, but they achieved their new clothes bit-by-bit over a long period of time. But if you want a Rolex that's actually breaking their own mode, sometimes you need to look outside of the sports pieces.
For me, the line that is often most overlooked has actually created some of Rolex's most interesting watches over the years. From the Midas and King Midas, to the reference we have here, the Cellini line has some hidden gems that lots of collectors do not even know exist. The reference we have here is the 5442/5, and dates to 2005. It utilises a rectangular case full of curves, fashioned from Everose gold, and measures in at approximately 27mm x 48mm. It houses a deep black dial with a deep-etched sunray style pattern known as Rayon flammé de la gloire, surrounding the upper hour and minute sub-dial, and lower sub-seconds. The outer edges of the dial are flanked by a ribbed pattern, feeling very Art Deco and unlike anything else in the Rolex range. It reminds me a little of a Lange Cabaret on the wrist, though a little more curvaceous.
Out back we have a display back giving a view into the magnificent calibre 7040 which is a COSC-certified in-house movement with around 70 hours of power reserve, and a lovely level of finish not usually seen on a Rolex. It's mounted to a Rolex Alligator strap with Everose deployant. If you're a Rolex nut in need of a dress watch, this is the one.
This particular example is a D-serial, so would date to circa-2005 and presents in TZ 'Good' condition. The case shows swirlies and hairlines throughout, though mostly free of dings, nicks and deep scratches. There is a slight flattening to one of the lugs, which is the reason for the 'Good' grading according to the TZ scale. Please see images for full condition details.
The 'gator strap is in excellent condition. The deployant shows some scratches, and a small pin dent. Will suit up to a roughly 8in wrist at full adjustment, with the micro adjustment on both sides of the clasp providing all the adjustment available. There's approximately 3.5cms of adjustment in total.
