Jaeger LeCoultre Complete Calendar Moonphase 2722 Retailed by Hermes - 1946
Jaeger LeCoultre Complete Calendar Moonphase 2722 Retailed by Hermes
Every now and then something truly special finds its way across our desk, and this Jaeger LeCoultre 2722 is one such watch. A little known reference as they are quite rare, it represents the first serially produced complicated wristwatch with the introduction of its complete calendar, and would have been quite the sight to behold in the 1940's. A landmark for both JLC, and fine watchmaking as a whole. A regular, if you could ever call one regular, 2722 is special enough, but this one is even more so as it was retailed by Hermès in period and the case back bears the engraving of the maison. Very cool.
This particular example was originally manufactured in 1946, with the case is fashioned in 18k Yellow Gold and measures in at 35mm. The case itself is absolutely gorgeous, and filled with Art Deco flourishes like the downward sloping teardrop lugs and deeply etched strakes along the centre flanks of the case as it meets the bezel and case back. It's one of the most beautiful cases we've ever had the pleasure of seeing in person.
Within this case lies a simply breathtaking dial, full of detail and with just the right level of patina. The layout is what is now the accepted standard for a complete calendar, with day and date apertures below 12, pointer date around its periphery, and running seconds containing a moonphase at 6. The colour of this examples moonphase disc is unbelievable. The applied dauphine markers match the dauphine hands, and while these come in different variations on this references, this particular spec is our favourite with it's double-daggers at 12.
Dial condition itself is superb, especially considering these are not water resistant at all, with speckling present that is consistent across the dial. The hands are also in lovely condition, with only minor marks.
Powering is it the calibre 494 in-house movement.
The case back is superb, with the Hermès deep and clearly visible along with the serial number, and hallmarks present.
It is finished with a lovely burgundy Hermes strap, with generic buckle.
This piece has been fully serviced, and images of the movement during this service are included within the listing. All functions operating as they should, and running beautifully.
Comes with an extract from the JLC archives. No box or papers.
A stunning bit of history, and a watch any true enthusiast would be proud to own.
