Breguet Marine 5517 White Gold Automatic 40mm 5517BB/Y2/BZ0

It's fairly easy to become blasé in this business, with so many cool watches coming across our desk. But every now and then something takes you by surprise, and this is one of those watches. Now, we've always had a soft spot for the Marine series, with their deft combination of haute horology and sporting pretense, but this elevates it to a level we've not had the pleasure of seeing before and it is truly spectacular in person.

Featuring a 40mm executed in white gold, with a thickness of 11.5mm, though if you'd said to us that it was under 11mm we wouldn't bat an eyelid as it feels very slim on the wrist. Lug-to-lug it measures in at 47.7mm with it's integrated lugs. The sides of the case feature a beautiful coin-edge finish that is inset , with a double stepped bezel with brushed and polished finishes. 

These integrated lugs flow into a magnificent white gold bracelet with a superb amount of heft, and is very restrained in it's styling. There's no large polished centre links to grab attention and look messy when they mark up, just polished inner sections to those broad brushed links, and bevels on the edges. It's the perfect demonstration of discreet luxury, which suits Breguet to a tee. Being on the bracelet, you can also test it's 100m of water resistance, though we'd probably suggest doing that in the hotel pool rather than the ocean!

Housed within this special, handmade case is a solid gold dial that is a magnificent galvanised blue. The centre guilloche is cut on rose lathes, with applied white gold Roman indices surrounding the brush minute track, and it is all topped with lumed white gold hands. 

Powering it is the calibre 777A automatic, with hacking seconds, inverted in-line lever escapement with silicon horns, as well as a silicon balance spring. Power reserve is 55 hours, and it's very nicely decorated.

This particular piece was originally purchased in Japan in March 2022 and presents in TZ 'Near Mint' condition. The case shows only very minor hairlines, with swirl marks on the bezel. Case back shows a couple of minor marks. Please see images for full condition details.

The bracelet has enough links to fit a 7.5in wrist, and shows desk dive marks which is unavoidable with gold.

No service history, but too new for that. Keeping COSC time, and all functions operating as they should.
