Rolex GMT-Master 6542 - 1957
Rolex GMT-Master 6542
This is it, the GMT and an absolute icon of the watch world. The 6542 is the original GMT from Rolex, and can’t help but evoke dreams of vast intercontinental trips during the golden age of air travel. First introduced in 1954, the 6542 was developed for Pan-Am Airlines after their request to Rolex for a watch that could simultaneously display two time zones for use on transatlantic flights. The reference 6542 was able to accomplish Pan-Am’s requirement for a second time zone display by adding a 24-hour hand and a rotating bezel to the GMT-Master’s self-winding movement, and thus one of the most recognisable watches in the world was born.
Given the historical significance of the 6542, and its short 5 year production run, it is understandably a very sought after model, and in all original condition can easily fetch 6 figures. This particular piece is not all original, and therefore makes a very accessible entry into the rarefied world of the 6542.
The case is original, and dates the piece to 1957. Judging by the date on the clasp it, it appears as though in 1973 the piece was sent to Rolex for a service and had its hands, dial, bezel and bracelet swapped for later items. The patina on the plots is a deep yellow, and the hands are perhaps a shade lighter.
Bezel is aluminium with a lovely fade, and the lower half is fuchsia.
The case is nicely preserved. Has been polished, but retains thick lugs and excellent finishing.
The bracelets is a C&I stretch, containing 11 links and with only very light stretch.
Was serviced in 2020 by Woods Watchmaking here in Oz, and is keeping COSC time.
